Sri Lanka’s Economic Strategy

Our Strategy for Sri Lanka’s economy is based on our experience of failure of controls as a way of directing the economy.We want  to eliminate price distortions in the economy ,and instead ,encourage production by restoring incentives.

We want to promote exports rather than support inefficient import substitution. We  wish to encourage an openly competitive economy rather than a siege economy. We would like to divert resources from consumption to investment., because rapid economic growth is more likely to promote employment generation and welfare in the long run than slower growth with more short term welfare where there is growing unemployment.

This will not mean a change from Sri Lanka’s past policies of providing basic human needs. Our investment in health and education for example ,will continue .We will look after the poorest by short term by short term income support ,not by price subsidisation. We will direct them towards income generating avenues. We hope to create these by our massive investment program. We want to save more, invest more ,produce more ,employ more and in this way ,have more welfare in the long run.
